The Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario with respect to Family Arbitration requires that family arbitrators must undertake ongoing training of 10 hours every two year period of which half must be on domestic violence or power imbalance issues.

We offered our last training course in January, 2012. Philip Epstein, Alfred Mamo and Dr. Peter Jaffe will offer the next course on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at the Law Society of Upper Canada. Since the Ministry requires a 10 hour program every two years and because the vast majority of practitioners want this accomplished in one day, the program will run from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and will include breakfast, lunch and refreshments during health breaks.

This ongoing training is required and mandatory for anyone who wishes to do a Family Arbitration in Ontario. We are currently applying to the Law Society of Upper Canada for accreditation. Our last program in 2012 granted 1.75 Professional Hours for experienced members and 7.75 Substantive Hours for experienced members. We will let you know in due course if this program will be accredited.

The program will devote at least half of the day to arbitration issues including the use of medical reports in family arbitrations, expert evidence, interviewing children, evidentiary problems in arbitration and the discussion of how to ensure effective and expeditious arbitrations. We will also delve into the complex world of domestic violence, power imbalances and screening and Dr. Jaffe will have some interesting presentations in that regard. We will have a number of prominent family law arbitrators as guest speakers together with mental health professionals.
