Here at the OBA Citizenship & Immigration Law Section, we are proud of our volunteers and we are constantly looking for ways to highlight their work and achievements. Member-at-Large Nandi Deterville was born and raised in the sunny Caribbean Island of Saint Lucia. She was called to the Bars of England & Wales and Saint Lucia in 2008 and practiced in a small general practice firm before immigrating to Canada. The 2022 Toronto International Film Festival opened with the world premiere of The Swimmers, a film based on the true story of two sisters who escaped from Syria after the start of the war in an effort to make it to Germany. As an immigration lawyer, it was a worthwhile reminder of the realities that are faced by many refugee claimants not just on their physical journey, but also once they have reached their destination.

It has been approximately one year since Canada first instituted travel restrictions that prevented the entry of many international travellers to Canada. Prior to that time, many immigration lawyers never had much need for Orders-in-Council or gave much thought to the possible impact of the Quarantine Act. But since that time, we have been bombarded at least monthly with orders and policy changes that directly impact our practices.
