Year End Update: Minister of Seniors Mandate Letter 2019

On December 13, 2019, the Prime Minister released the Minister of Seniors Mandate Letter to Minister Deb Schulte. The Mandate Letter demonstrates the breadth of issues relevant to seniors across the country and calls on Minister Schulte to work with fellow Ministers to deliver the following priorities:

  • Financial Security:
    • Increase the Old Age Security pension and survivor benefits in the Canada Pension Plan and Quebec Pension Plan.
    • Lead work within Employment and Social Development Canada on seniors programming, including the New Horizons for Seniors Program, benefitting from the work of the National Seniors Council.
    • Enhance consumer protections to ensure they respond to the unique needs of seniors.
    • Review the government’s capacity to connect seniors to benefits and programs for which they are eligible.
    • Ensure seniors’ housing needs are reflected in the implementation of the National Housing Strategy.
