We currently have an exciting opportunity for a General Counsel at our office in Richmond, BC or Mississauga ON.  Reporting to the President & CEO, the General Counsel is responsible for facilitating quality delivery of legal services as well as provide legal advice, interpretation and guidance to senior management as well as other business units. This position will also support the general management of legal risk in Mr. Lube’s operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Partner with leadership, team members and other stakeholders across Mr. Lube Canada to address and manage legal related matters.
  • Working with the business and cross functional partners to negotiate, review and draft contracts.
  • Manage and collaborate with outside counsel on litigation, and other legal matters.
  • Work with cross functional in-house teams to proactively identify and address key legal issues in Mr. Lube Canada operations.
  • Anticipate and address legal issues to protect the interests of Mr. Lube Canada and reduce exposure to legal risks.
  • Responsible for the preparation of franchise agreements as well as other ancillary legal documents, including franchise disclosure documents, subleases and franchise transfer documentation.
  • Responsible for negotiation and drafting of various lease documentation including head leases, lease renewals, lease terminations as well as management of lease conditions.
  • Management and maintenance of corporate records, registrations, and other legal administration.
  • Perform due diligence on proposed business development transactions.
  • Draft, review, negotiate and administer legal and transactional documentation.
  • Monitor and analyze changes in the law to identify legal risks; propose creative and effective solutions to address those risks.
  • Complete ad hoc requests from management.

Education and Qualifications:

  • A Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or a Juris Doctor (J.D.) Degree from an accredited Canadian Law School.
  • 5 - 10 years of combined law firm and in-house legal department experience, preferably in a franchise and leasing environment.
  • Practical yet creative problem-solving approach to assessing and balancing risk on behalf of the company.
  • Proactive, dynamic and result driven self starter with a high degree of attention to detail and excellent follow-up skills.
  • Possesses excellent teamwork skills and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Possess sound and practical business judgement and an outgoing and professional work ethic.

  • Ability to understand general business operations, issues and dynamics beyond the scope of basic legal issues.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with members of other departments in order to support their functions as well as to assist them in supporting the Legal team.
  • Driven and self-motivated with a strong desire for learning.
  • Extremely organized with a strong sense of priority and commitment to deadlines.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to multi-task.
  • Ability to manage a heavy workload and prioritize multiple projects.
  • Ability to work independently while functioning well in a team environment.
  • Strategic, creative thinker with good business judgment who can generate possible solutions and options to achieve business goals within the structures of legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong communicator and good listener, with ability to craft clear and effective messages both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships across various stakeholder groups within the Mr. Lube Canada network and externally.
