Kathryn Bush, Partner, Blakes, is being honoured this year with the OBA Award of Excellence in Pensions & Benefits Law for her outstanding leadership and contributions to the field of pensions and benefits law. Gain a glimpse of what motivates her in this candid Q&A.

  1. Who or what inspires you most in your career?

The Pensions practice is a multi-disciplinary practice, which allows us to deal in many areas of the law including administrative, litigation, human rights, securities, employment, constitutional and corporate in addition to pension minimum standards. The area has also provided many varied challenges from dealing with surpluses to coping with deficits, from minimum standards compliance matters to structuring investment vehicles. The law in this area is always changing. I have had the extreme privilege to work through all these issues, to be a member of an administrative tribunal and to serve as an expert advising on legislative change.

  1. What does a ‘good day’, or success, look like for you in your work?

Working with my clients to achieve their important goals is success for me. It is a real pleasure being able to be on so many teams, with so many different opportunities and to work with so many great people.

  1. What challenges or motivates you most about your particular area of practice?

In addition to the issues above, the Pensions Bar is a real treat. It is a wonderfully bright and congenial group!

  1. Apart from encyclopedic knowledge of the law, is there a single trait that you think all effective lawyers share?

Hard work and enthusiasm for their work.
