What is your practice area? After almost 10 years practicing general commercial litigation, I joined a small insurance defence firm and since that time my practice has become largely focused on insurance – both defending tort claims on behalf of insureds and providing coverage advice to insurers.
What attracts you to this practice area? I find the work extremely rewarding, largely owing to the clients: insurance professionals (adjusters, claims examiners, etc.) are well versed in the litigation process and have a good knowledge of the legal issues, which means that defending claims is more of a “team” effort; that, and insurers tend to make pragmatic decisions driven by risk and exposure, rather than “the principle at issue” – which, from experience, is typically a very costly basis for litigating.
