Truth and Reconciliation Commission for Canada: Calls To Action

On June 2, 2015, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission for Canada released its report summary. It contained several recommendations addressing the treatment of Aboriginal Children and Youth in the justice system. These include:

  • Child Welfare: “We call upon the federal, provincial, territorial, and Aboriginal governments to commit to reducing the number of Aboriginal children in care” (#1)
  • Education: “We call upon the Government of Canada to repeal section 43 of the Criminal Code of Canada” (#6)
  • Youth Criminal Justice: “We call upon the federal, provincial, territorial, and Aboriginal governments to commit to eliminating the overrepresentation of Aboriginal youth in custody over the next decade.” (#38)
