The OBA is committed to serving the whole lawyer from their desk to their doorstep. We know that lawyers have an innate desire to give back to their communities and we’re making it easier for them to do that.
That's why we've created this new initiative - Eviction Help: The Tenant-Lawyer Connection Portal (TLCP), in which the OBA provides the virtual meeting space and volunteer lawyers provide the legal service.
As an OBA member, we're inviting you to sign-up for a weekly 2-hour timeslot during which you will be available to provide 30 minutes of pro bono summary legal advice to residential tenants, who are facing eviction for non-payment of rent and who have a hearing scheduled at the Landlord Tenant Board.
In order to participate in this initiative, you must be a member in good standing with the Law Society of Ontario and be insured through your own LawPro and/or other E&O coverage. The OBA is not providing legal advice and participating lawyers will not be insured through OBA.
To further support our members taking part in this initiative, we are providing a free one-hour CPD program entitled "A Legal Primer on Tenant Evictions in 2020-2021", which reviews the overarching legal concerns tenants face and how to provide effective pro bono summary advice in this area. The TLCP also provides volunteers with written materials and links to resources.
The TLCP will be launched to the public in January 2021, so we encourage you to get involved now!
