Typically, there are two types of lawyers: those who work in a firm (or as solo practitioners) and those who act as in-house counsel for one client (or group of related clients). As more and more lawyers join the construction bar, there is greater interest in what life looks like with in-house counsel for construction companies.
For this Newsletter, we decided it would be interesting to interview a number of in-house counsel at construction companies for their insights and experiences on this topic. These next few posts will be a series of short Q&A’s that will hopefully shed light and provide valuable information to OBA’s construction and infrastructure law bar on the experiences of in-house lawyers in construction companies.
Jason Lewis
Jason Lewis is Principal Legal Counsel at WSP, one of the world's leading engineering professional services consulting firms.
Jason’s practice includes providing advice on professional agreements between owners, contractors, architects, engineers and consultants. He often assists in the drafting and negotiation of supplementary conditions for standard form industry agreements and provides ongoing advice on contract interpretation, non-payment and termination.
Jason graduated from the University of Ottawa in 2007, with Common and Civil Law degrees and was called to the Ontario Bar in 2008. Jason also received a Bachelor of Arts degree from McGill University in 2002. Prior to joining WSP, Jason practiced at a global real estate development company, one of Toronto’s premiere boutique land development firms and started his career at the Regional Municipality of Halton.
Since 2016-17, Jason has served as a member of the Ontario Bar Association Construction and Infrastructure Section Executive. For the 2021-22 term, Jason will occupy the Vice-Chair position. Jason is also the Co-Chair of the CanBIM Project Delivery & Risk Management Think Tank and is a member of the Association of Consulting Engineering Companies — Ontario Government Relations Committee.
Jason lectures often and has organized a number of professional seminars in his area of expertise.
