LSUC Releases Key Reports on Licensing and Diversity in the Legal Profession

The Law Society of Upper Canada has released two key reports on topics of interest to members of the OBA.

  • The LSUC Professional Development and Competence Committee released the Pathways Pilot Project Evaluation and Enhancements to Licensing Report (the “Pathways Report”), which was presented for information at Convocation on September 22, 2016 and the recommendations will be deliberated at Convocation on November 9, 2016.  Of particular note, the Pathways report proposes to end the Law Practice Program (LPP) following the conclusion of the 2016-17 term, and change the structure of the examinations required to successfully enter the legal profession.  OBA Members are encouraged to review this report, and provide any comments no later than October 5th to the OBA Policy and Public Affairs Department (advocacy@oba.org).
  • The  Challenges Faced by Racialized Licensees Working Group’s final report, titled Working Together for Change: Strategies to Address Issues of Systemic Racism in the Legal Professions, contains 13 recommendations that fall within 5 broad categories of action: measuring progress, accelerating culture shift, educating for change, implementing supports and operations of the Law Society. The final report will be before Convocation for decision on December 2, 2016.  OBA Members are encouraged to review this report, and provide any comments no later than October 19th to the OBA Policy and Public Affairs Department (advocacy@oba.org).
