Premier Doug Ford announced on Monday that the government will implement a moratorium on commercial evictions between June 3 and Aug. 31 for small businesses that qualify for the federal government’s Canada Emergency Commercial Rent Assistance program.
This will be done through proposed changes to the Commercial Tenancies Act, and will reverse evictions that occurred on or after June 3. If passed, the proposed legislation will make it illegal to evict a commercial tenant until Aug. 31.
The government says the legislation will be tabled in the coming days.
