Articling students and LPP candidates: don’t put your career advancement on hold!  This on-demand series is designed to meet the current needs of new Articling students and LPP candidates in a convenient, easy to access format. You will gain strategies on conducting legal research efficiently and writing a persuasive research memo, as well as practical tips on how to negotiate in transactional work and succeed in motions court.

Effective Advocacy in Negotiations

As a young lawyer, it is important to develop strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills to help protect your clients’ interests. During these unprecedented times, you should also ensure that you are ready to handle the unique interpersonal challenges of virtual/remote negotiations. Join us for an interactive discussion, as our faculty members share their expert insight on important negotiation topics:

  • How to prepare yourself and your client for virtual negotiations
  • Advantages of mediation, arbitration, and other forms of Alternative Dispute Resolution
  • Key professionalism obligations under the Rules of Professional Conduct  
  • Tips for negotiating in different contexts, including:

Successful advocacy at the appellate level requires skills in persuading judges with both written and oral arguments. As new calls to the bar and young lawyers, it is critical for you to develop a strong foundation of written and oral advocacy skills which you can build upon while expanding your toolkit in the future. This fireside chat with the Chief Justice of Ontario, The Honourable George R. Strathy, will be moderated by experienced litigators Shantona Chaudhury and Dennis Ong.
