The use of the joint session in mediation has been a hot topic of study and debate in recent years. I have weighed in on the discussion. In June 2015, I questioned whether the joint session was a help or a hindrance and then in December 2015 I revisited the debate to offer my thoughts on why the joint session remains an important part of the mediation process.

Appeals in the insolvency arena, although procedurally governed by provincial rules of civil procedure, become a little more complicated when dealing with the appeal provisions contained in the BIA. That means that when appealing an order granted under the BIA, the first thing you need to figure out is whether you have an automatic right of appeal or if you need to seek leave to appeal.

Sukanya Pillay was honoured by WLF on June 22, 2016 with the OBA Award of Excellence in the Promotion of Women’s Equality. Sukanya was another in a long line of outstanding women honoured since 1996 by the Women Lawyers Forum and its predecessor Feminist Legal Analysis Section. The Award recognizes the significant contributions made by feminists to the promotion of women’s equality rights in Canadian society, through their work for social justice or the advancement of substantive law.
