Hamilton lawyer recognized as one of province’s top litigators
TORONTO – John Evans, one of Ontario’s most experienced and respected civil litigation lawyers, is being honoured by the Ontario Bar Association (OBA) with a prestigious award.
Evans, senior partner of Evans Sweeny Bordin LLP in Hamilton, will be recognized for his more than 40 years of practice with the OBA Award for Excellence in Civil Litigation.
Evans has shown leadership within the legal profession as president of the Advocates’ Society, president of the Hamilton Law Association, the Medical Legal Society, and as founding chair of the Sopinka Cup, an annual oral advocacy competition for law students named for former Supreme Court of Canada Justice John Sopinka.
Evans, a Queen’s Counsel since 1979, was previously the recipient of the Law Society Medal in 2008, the OBA’s Award for Excellence in Insurance Law in 2008, and has been a Fellow of The American College of Trial Lawyers in 1999.
This latest honour, the most prestigious award that can be conferred on an Ontario lawyer in the practice of civil litigation, will be presented to Evans at a gala dinner on September 17 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Toronto.
Speakers at the dinner include highly respected lawyers Julian Porter, Q.C. and Paul Sweeny, partner at Evans, Sweeny, Bordin LLP and past president of the OBA.
“No one is more deserving of this award than John Evans, who is one of the most respected and renowned civil litigation lawyers in Ontario’s history,” said Colin Stevenson, partner at Stevensons LLP of Toronto and chair of the Nomination and Selection Committee.
“John Evans is a lawyer’s lawyer and represents the very best of the civil litigation bar,” said Guillermo Schible, partner at Schible Law of Toronto and chair of the OBA’s Civil Litigation Section.
The OBA Award of Excellence in Civil Litigation recognizes exceptional contributions and achievements in civil litigation by members of the OBA in the following areas: outstanding advocacy skills; professionalism, integrity and civility; teaching of civil litigation and practice; the enhancement of the practice of civil litigation; and leadership in the civil litigation bar. Recent award recipients include Bryan Finlay, Q.C. in 2012 and Harvey Strosberg, Q.C. in 2011.
The OBA, a branch of the Canadian Bar Association, is the voice of the legal profession in Ontario, representing more than 17,000 lawyers, judges, law professors and law students throughout the province.
