Looking for Governance experience in small not-for-profit setting. This is an excellent launchpad for Board experience.

The Rosedale Day School is an accredited independent elementary school located in Downtown Toronto, founded in 1995. With over 160 students and 36 dedicated, creative teachers and staff, our classrooms foster student engagement through innovative pedagogical practices and creative, authentic units of learning. At the core of RDS is the warm sense of community and support that surrounds each student as they grow. Powerful teacher-student relationships form the backbone of learning and development, and a strong partnership between the school and parent community ensures that every RDS student builds the confidence and independence that is critical for success in high school and beyond.

The Board is committed to ensuring there is diverse representation on the Board whose skills and experience align with our competency framework.  In assessing applications, the Committee favours no particular professional background over another, but we frequently seek specific areas of experience and expertise.

Responsibilities:

  • RDS has a ‘working-style board’, which means Directors must be willing to commit to 8 meetings per year, plus subcommittee work, as required
  • Provide strategic leadership to the organization, ensuring that the mission, vision, and goals are met
  • Help guide the school’s long-term fiscal, operational, and risk-management planning
  • Be committed to actively participating and sharing ideas with the Board

Time Commitment:

  • Work remotely/virtual between September and June
  • Regular attendance at virtual committee meetings (Minimum attendance of 6 meetings)
  • Evenings
  • Yearly hourly commitment: 14 hours. 10 hours of meetings 4 hours of meeting prep

Skills/Requirements:

  • Prior experience serving on a non-profit Board is an asset, but we are happy to arrange formal board training as well.

We are seeking candidates with:

  • Experience as a practicing lawyer in the areas of commercial, governance and board duties, litigation and/or regulatory; OR,
  • Experience with the management or oversight of owned and managed capital assets to ensure effective utilization, maintenance, and management of all assets now and into the future, including facility development or expansion and related budgeting, procurement, contracting and construction management processes.
  • Maintains a positive attitude – is outgoing and cheerful with stakeholder interactions
  • Passion for creating an innovative learning environment for the future
  • Ability to work with confidential information with discretion
  • Familiar with Google Suite, Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Excellent communication skills both verbal and written
  • Self-motivated with ability to work well independently and remotely
