In Canada, the rule of law is working so well that most of us rarely notice it. We lock our doors and trust they will stay locked. We speak our minds without fear. We sign contracts knowing they will be honoured. We go to work expecting to be paid. These everyday moments feel ordinary, but only because the legal foundations beneath them are strong.
Around the world, we are watching what happens when those foundations crack. Protesters are met with violence. Journalists are silenced. Courts are weakened. Rights that once felt secure disappear seemingly overnight. These are not distant, abstract problems. They are reminders that the rule of law is not guaranteed. It must be understood, valued, and protected.
Here in Canada, our justice system continues to function because community leaders uphold it with integrity and vigilance. Often, their work is quiet and steady, but it is always essential. And in a time when democratic norms are eroding elsewhere, Canadians cannot afford to take this for granted.
The OBA’s Rule of Law campaign is a call to pay attention. Local lawyers across the province are stepping forward to help communities understand what the rule of law looks like in daily life, why it matters, and how we can protect it together.
Through clear, relatable examples and community-focused presentations, OBA lawyers are shining a light on the invisible protections that make our society safe, fair, and free.
