Exciting Upcoming OBA Child and Youth Law Section Opportunities for the 2026/2027 Term

October 19, 2026 | Whitney Evans

Get your calendars ready! The OBA Child and Youth Law Section is excited to announce upcoming opportunities for learning, networking, and contributing this term.

On November 19, 2026, we are hosting an in-person celebration to recognize the 2026 Award of Excellence in Child and Youth Law recipient, Katherine Kavassalis, Deputy Legal Director of the Office of the Children's Lawyer. Join us at the OBA Conference Centre (20 Toronto Street, 2nd Floor) from 5:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Enjoy the company of fellow practitioners as we hear from the award winner and special guests. The event coincides with National Child Day (November 20), which acknowledges the importance of children’s rights and of upholding them. Discounted ticket prices are available for NFP, Legal Aid, and Legal Clinic attendees.

On March 25, 2027, back by popular demand, we are offering our half-day hybrid program on Advanced Issues in Child Protection. Registration details will be available closer to the event. As a reminder, you can watch last year’s program held on June 24, 2026, chaired by Dawn Dubois (Children’s Aid Society of Algoma) and Allison Williams (Justice for Children and Youth) on demand.

Also of note, on November 13, 2026, the CBA Child and Youth Law Online Symposium – National Online Symposium on the YCJA and FASD will be held online from 10:00 am until 3:30 pm. This year’s theme is “Providing Access to Justice to Neurodiverse Youth in Criminal Courts in Canada”. Take note of group rates for firms/organizations.

There are also two more opportunities to contribute to the Child and Youth Law Section’s Newsletter this term. Submissions for the third and fourth editions will be welcomed until March 1, 2027 and May 31, 2027, respectively.
