The face of law is changing. According to the Law Society of Ontario, about 43 per cent of lawyers are women. The goal of this article is to put racialized and Indigenous women lawyers in the spotlight and amplify their voices in the conversation about gender equality.

With the closing of a particularly challenging year that brought several changes for all of us, 2021 has reinforced the idea of remote working on a global level.  Many hoped for the return of some normality at the announcement of the vaccines, however the reality of this has been delayed. Right now, my journey is far from over. I am now preparing for the upcoming March 2021 Barrister and Solicitor exams while actively applying for student positions at firms and companies. While most firms are extremely vocal about supporting and training international lawyers, some don’t even consider you as a potential summer student at their firm.

When I began writing this piece, I was still waiting for the results of two NCA exams. I had taken them in August 2020, amidst all the chaos that the pandemic brought and continues to bring into our lives. Like most people who wrote the exams with me, the wait was accompanied with increasing anxiety. While there was hope that this story would end well, precedent dictated that I move onward and forward regardless of the outcome.

Pandemic circumstances intensify inequalities related to gender, and other factors such as economic status, race, culture, language, and other intersecting elements of our identities. This article will discuss some technologies lawyers can consider adding to their practice to increase flexibility and efficiency in the practice of law, particularly at a time when the demands on our time appear to be greater than ever.

Women must continue to press for flexible work, equal pay, and reliable childcare in court cases and in their workplaces so that we call all strive to shatter the glass ceiling. We all want to experience the incredible joy in raising our children, something I have experienced first-hand with two children of my own, but maintain our professional careers. 

COVID-19 has been a challenging time with work, building a business, and my three kids (10 and under) at home for six months.  Even when not living through a pandemic, I find it difficult to make time to prioritize my health and wellness.
