Since 2005, some 142 petitions and 16 private members bills called for the extension of the Ontario Ombudsman’s mandate into the broader public sector. With the passage of Bill 8, the Public Sector and MPP Accountability and Transparency Act, 2014, the Ombudsman’s jurisdiction has now been expanded to include school boards (commencing September 1, 2015), and universities and municipalities (commencing January 1, 2016).
