Who is Summer Lewis?

I am an associate lawyer at Fasken. I have a split practice between the technology and privacy groups. I advise on various technology agreements, including software development agreements, software as a service agreements, and outsourcing agreements. My privacy practice involves providing organizations with advice on compliance with federal and provincial privacy laws, in addition to helping clients develop privacy policies and procedures and negotiate contracts related to personal information, such as data processing agreements. I also provide technology and privacy advice with respect to various transactional matters.

Why did you choose IT/IP and what would you tell a young lawyer entering the IT/IP field?

My interest in technology was sparked by my work with a fashion law blog during my undergraduate degree. After researching and writing about how technology disrupts the fashion industry (think smart clothing embedded with sensors), I wanted to learn more about technology and privacy law.

As a young lawyer, I would share with my colleagues the same mantras I repeat to myself. A recent one that resonates with me (especially when stretch assignments come along) is to embrace the fear and do it anyway.
