Who is Anastassia Trifonova? This is my third year as a member of the OBA IP/ IT Law Section’s Executive Committee. I am in-house counsel for a wine company, Arterra Wines Canada, located in Mississauga. My practice focuses mostly on IP, marketing, regulatory, privacy, and technology areas.

Why did you choose IP/IT and what would you tell a young lawyer entering the IT/IP field?

My background is in science and early on in my legal career I developed an interest in intellectual property. I began my practice in an IP firm and over the course of my career I discovered that I enjoyed practicing in marketing and regulatory areas as well. As in-house counsel, every day involves new questions and challenges, not all of them are IT/IP specific. Consequently, I learned the importance of being resourceful and having the right attitude when approaching new issues in my practice.

My advice for new lawyers entering the IT/IP field is to think about different options available to them. There is no need to focus on one specific area of the law early on in your career if you aren’t certain what you are interested in yet. Seek out a variety of work and meet as many people as you can so that you can figure out what suits you and your goals best.
