The Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC) recently released new resources to help both education professionals and children understand privacy and access law in Ontario.

For professionals, the IPC has posted a helpful video on YouTube providing an overview of school boards’ and educators’ obligations under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA). The video covers collection, access, disclosure, and storage of information, as well as digital privacy concerns in the education sector.

You will also find policy guidance from the IPC in A Guide to Privacy and Access to Information in Ontario Schools. The guide includes a variety of special topics, such school photographs, disclosure to a children’s aid society, and privacy in the digital classroom, as well as links to lesson plans about privacy. In addition to that detailed guidance about MFIPAA in education, there are Fact Sheets for educators and parents.
