Office of the Children’s Lawyer: Property Rights of Children in Ontario (FAQ)

This month Ontario’s Office of the Children’s Lawyer (OCL) released a new resource on its website which discusses the property rights of children in Ontario. These Frequently Asked Questions deal with the following topics related to children’s interests in civil litigation, estates and trust matters:

  • describe the OCL’s role in civil litigation;
  • describe the OCL’s role in estate and trust matters;
  • identify who can be paid money which is owing to a child;
  • outline the obligations of those responsible for managing a child's money;  
  • identify the process to pay money into court for a child, the benefits of the payment of a child’s money into court and the process to request payment of funds from a child’s court account; and
  • set out the process to serve the OCL with court documents.
