Section Executive Elections

Nominations for the executive of each section for the 2024-2025 term open on April 17, 2024. If you are looking for ways to expand your influence in the association and in your profession, we encourage you to self-nominate and get involved.Whether you are interested in developing continuing education programs, participating in advocacy and public policy initiatives, or just want to support the efforts of your section by serving as a Member at Large, participating in a section executive can be a valuable and rewarding experience!

Section nominations will again this year be exclusively accepted through our online nomination form, which can be found at oba.simplyvoting.com. 

To vote you must be a member of the section.

  • Presides at the meetings of the Section
  • Oversees the performance of all activities of the Section
  • Reports in writing to the OBA Board of Directors, before its June meeting, on the work of the Section
  • Represents, or designates a representative for the  Section at the OBA Annual Meeting, each meeting of OBA Council and each meeting of the National Section
  • Endeavours to have representation for the Section at the annual meeting of CBA
  • Exercises any other powers and duties usually associated with the office in accordance with the OBA Section Constitution

  • Assists the Chair in the performance of the responsibilities of that office,
  • Acts for the Chair during the absence or inability of the Chair to act,
  • Exercises any other powers and duties that the Chair designates.

  • Takes minutes of business transacted at any meeting of the Section, the Section Executive, and the Officers,
  • Provides a copy of all minutes to the Section’s OBA staff coordinator,
  • Ensures that the Section complies with the OBA Section Manual, the OBA Section Constitution and OBA's by-laws and policies and shall exercise any other duties that the Chair designates.

  • Liaises with the OBA Public Affairs Committee,
  • In cooperation with the OBA Public Affairs Department, coordinates the preparation of the Section's advice and input, when requested.
  • Contributes to the preparation of draft Section and OBA submissions on current issues to governments, regulators and other organizations.

  • Solicits and compiles articles and information of interest to the Section membership and edits articles for the Section’s web page
  • Works in cooperation with the OBA staff editor to upload articles and approve regular e-mail notifications.

  • Provides content recommendations for the Section website (e.g. news items, online legal resources, etc)
  • Encourages discussion and engagement with the Section community through the forum found on the Section website and OBA social media campaigns
  • Delivers updates and insights into technological innovations affecting the Section’s practice area, including new software, hardware, online resources, etc.

  • Works with the Section Executive and OBA PD staff to identify topics and speakers and to develop the Section’s professional development programs
  • Advises the Section of relevant upcoming OBA programs at Section Executive meetings and on the Section forum
  • Works with the Section Executive and OBA staff to encourage participation in the Section’s CPD programs

  • Participate in the general business of the section and assume specific projects as assigned by the Chair

  • Participates in the general business of the Section and assumes specific projects as assigned by the Chair

NOTE:  Each Section has one Student  Member at Large position availble.

  • Works with the Section executive and OBA staff on regional outreach for the Section
  • Endeavours to identify issues and topics of interest to section members outside of the GTA

  • Participates in the general business of the Section and assumes specific projects as assigned by the Chair
  • Liaises with the Student executive and OBA staff to promote the OBA within their law school and identifies the issues and topics of interest of the students of their law school
  • Coordinates a minimum of one event at their law school, with the assistance of OBA staff, that promotes the value of OBA membership

NOTE: This is a position on the Student Section Executive only

  • Participates in the general business of the Section and assumes specific projects as assigned by the Chair
  • Identifies issues and topics of interest specific to articling students

The criteria for serving on a section executive (as outlined in our new Section Constitution, are as follows:

  • You must be a current member of the section
  • You must be a current member of the CBA
  • If you've served for 6 consecutive years on the executive and one or more of those years were not in the role of Chair, Vice-Chair or Past Chair of the section (the exempt positions) you must step down for one year and are not eligible to run for the 2022-2023 term
  • During the course of the section year you must maintain your CBA membership (as a section executive you receive complimentary membership in that section)
  • Officers of the section executive: Secretary, Vice Chair, Chair and Past Chair may sit for a term of one year
  • Named positions, with the exception of Officers, may sit for a term of two years

  • Participate in the development of continuing education programs
  • Write and edit articles for publication on the section's web site
  • Participate in advocacy initiatives and submissions to government on behalf of your section
  • Network with peers sharing similar practice specific and professional interests
  • Grow the profile of the section and of the executive members
