JOB SUMMARY

The Legal Counsel will report to both the Vice-President, Legal & General Counsel for general legal issues and to the Senior Vice President, Human Resources & Administration on all employment law matters. This role will have responsibilities on a broad range of issues, including: reviewing and drafting of contracts, monitoring and reporting on legislative developments that impact the P&C insurance industry, and supporting IBC’s Human Resources department with respect to employment law matters.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Assist internal client groups in the review and preparation of contracts relating to their operations, including NDAs, Service Agreements, Consulting Agreements, and Licensing Agreements.
  • Monitor legislative and judicial developments that affect IBC members and drafting summary bulletins to inform IBC members of such developments.
  • Attend Committee meetings as needed to monitor the discussion for compliance with IBC’s Competition Compliance Meeting Protocol.
  • Provide legal support Human Resources with respect to employment law issues.
  • Monitor developments on employment laws and provide feedback and revisions to HR Policies & Procedures as needed. Review and advise on all employment HR documents.

QUALIFICATIONS   

  • Member of the Bar of a Canadian province or territory.
  • 3-5 years of experience in employment law and corporate law in an in-house or law firm environment.
  • Experience in employment law across Canadian jurisdictions (ON, NS, AB, BC with QC an asset).
  • Experience in employment litigation, human rights law and other administrative laws such as occupational health and safety would be an asset.
  • Exceptional analytical and writing skills and demonstrated ability to distill complex legal concepts into business friendly language to advise on legal risks.
  • Strong leadership/interpersonal skills.
  • Strong strategic thinking, risk assessment and presentation skills.
  • Understanding of trade associations and their relationship to government and other stakeholders.
  • Effective relationship-building skills; comfortable working independently or as part of a team; adaptable to changing work volumes and timelines.
  • Bilingualism (French & English) an asset.
