Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) is one of five regional health authorities in British Columbia. The mandate of VCH is to plan, deliver, monitor, and report on health services, which include population and public health programs, high quality community-based health care and support services, acute hospital care, as well as improved productivity and performance. As the preeminent health provider in the province, VCH is seen as a system leader and the ‘go to’ on numerous legal matters.
Vancouver Coastal Health is responsible for the delivery of $4.1 billion in community, hospital and long-term care services to more than one million people in communities in British Columbia including Richmond, Vancouver, the North Shore, Sunshine Coast, Sea to Sky corridor, Powell River, Bella Bella and Bella Coola. VCH also provides specialized care and services for people throughout BC and is the province's hub of health care education and research. It has 27,000 full-time and part-time staff, including 9,805 nurses and 3,200 physicians in their hospitals and community health centres, and 3,000 active volunteers.
Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer & VP Strategic Business Services, the General Counsel leads the largest in-house legal team in BC health care, and oversees a broad portfolio including privacy, corporate and information governance, contract law/management, physician agreements and privileging as well as all other operational matters including procurement, regulatory compliance and risk management. The General Counsel is responsible for providing practical and strategic legal advice to the VCH Board of Directors, Senior Executive Team, Executive Committees and all departments. The General Counsel may sit on or lead various internal and external committees both locally and provincially for topics tied to the portfolio.
The ideal candidate is a lawyer with experience either in private practice or as a General Counsel in a complex organization, who brings a broad range of corporate commercial legal experience including intellectual property, real estate and/or strategic contract negotiations. Armed with superior relationship skills, the new General Counsel will have a track record of finding practical, workable solutions and of providing clear advice in addition to the strategic agility to influence a wide range of external stakeholders.
