WHAT I DO
I am a human rights lawyer specializing in the representation of children with disabilities who have experienced discrimination, as well as an AODA subject matter expert providing disability/accessibility awareness education and assistance with legislative compliance requirements.
HIGHLIGHTS OF MY PRO BONO WORK
I provide pro bono counsel support to parents of children with disabilities as they advocate for accommodations for their children within various settings.
I also assist lawyers in understanding how to best support their clients who are in receipt of ODSP so any agreements will not negatively impact their clients' ongoing entitlement to support payments.
WHY I DO THIS PRO BONO WORK
Parents of children with disabilities often have to advocate for their children at every turn due to systemic barriers, be it within the school system or while enjoying leisure activities as a family. For them, the need is great to have someone who can provide legal support. As a lawyer with a disability, I have both the lived experience and the legal skills to often help resolve a problem efficiently. It is immensely gratifying when an accommodation issue can be quickly resolved through education. Sometimes, it just takes the suggestion of doing something a little differently that can achieve the desired result of an inclusive environment. In my role of providing pro bono legal services to parents, I am able to make what can be an intimidating process for them more accessible.
ONE COMMENT TO ENCOURAGE OTHERS
Don't underestimate your contributions as a lawyer. Provision of pro bono legal services is a tremendous opportunity for lawyers to use their legal skills to advance access to justice principals while giving back to marginalized communities. As lawyers, we can and do make a difference.
