Decision Comes After Judicial Appointment of Ranjan Agarwal

TORONTO – Karen Perron will continue as OBA President for the first six months of the 2022-2023 term. The decision comes following the appointment of 1st Vice-President Ranjan Agarwal – who was the incoming president – to the Superior Court of Justice.

On September 1, Perron will helm an all-woman team of officers. It will include Kelly McDermott, who will serve as 1st Vice-President before beginning her presidency for the 2023-2024 term six months early – on March 1; 2nd Vice-President Kathryn Manning; Signa Daum Shanks as Secretary; Treasurer Mariam Moktar; and Charlene Theodore, who will stay on as immediate past-president until March.

“I want to congratulate Justice Agarwal on his appointment. We are proud of him and grateful for the legacy he leaves the OBA. Access to justice, leadership, and equality, diversity and inclusion were to be the focus of his mandate as president, and I will ensure the goals he set are accomplished,” said Perron. “I am honoured to continue my mandate as president. Every day, we see the tremendous, positive impact OBA members are making in the profession, in their communities, and in the advancement of justice for all Ontarians. I am dedicated to supporting Ontario lawyers from every community and every corner of the province as they play this crucial role.

“I also want to thank my firm – BLG – and the Regional Municipality of Durham – where McDermott is a senior solicitor – for supporting us in our extended roles. It is truly a valued contribution to the profession.”

The OBA Board of Directors is responsible for all aspects of the operation of the association. It receives and reviews monthly reports from each staff department, and monitors the health and well-being of the organization. It addresses operational issues as they arise, and has the authority to approve policy positions recommended by Sections and/or OBA Council.
