Special message from The Honourable Geoffrey B. Morawetz

  • March 02, 2020

Dear Members,

We recently received the attached letter from The Honourable Geoffrey B. Morawetz, Chief Justice of the Superior Court of Justice, and have been asked to relay this information to our members.

"In the recent past, the Superior Court has experienced incidents where counsel have brought dangerous exhibits into court without providing advance notice to court security. In these cases, court security were unable to assess the risks posed by the exhibits or take steps to ensure the safety of everyone in the courtroom.

This letter is to advise counsel that they are expected to notify court security about any item that may present a substantial risk of physical injury if not properly handled or stored. These items include, but are not limited to, firearms, drugs, knives and explosive or otherwise hazardous substances.

Counsel should make the notification as soon as they know which such items they will be bringing and the date and time of the hearing. They should not wait until the day of the hearing.

Counsel's co-operation is greatly appreciated.

Yours truly,

Geoffrey B. Morawetz,
Chief Justice.
