Ontario Announces Gender Diversity Targets

  • June 07, 2016

On June 7, 2016 the Premier announced new “Gender Diversity Targets,” which flow from recommendations in a report commissioned by the government on Gender Diversity on Boards in Canada.  Two targets were announced by the Ontario government:

  1. By 2019, women will make up at least 40% of all appointments to every provincial board and agency; and
  2. By the end of 2017, businesses will set a target of appointing 30% women to their boards of directors, with achievement of that target within three to five years thereafter.

Also announced is the establishment of a steering committee that will provide input on the implementation of the 11 recommendations in the Gender Diversity on Boards in Canada report.  This steering committee will be co-chaired by the Minister of Finance and the Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues, and will include Maureen Jensen, Chair and CEO of the OSC, and Vector Dodig, President and CEO of CIBC, among others.
