Legislative and Policy Update - July 16 - 20

It was a busy week at Queen’s Park as the Legislative Assembly met for its first regular week of business. The week kicked off with some housekeeping from Speaker Ted Arnott, who advised that one of the eight independent MPPs in the chamber (7 Liberals and one Green) would be provided with a question each day the House sits. Question Period proceeded to focus on several themes, all relating to the new government’s legislative and policy agenda.

Legislative and Policy Update - July 11 - 13

This week marked the start of the 42nd Parliament, with the 1st session beginning on July 11th with the election of a new speaker. Long-time PC MPP Ted Arnott was elected as Speaker of the House by his MPP colleagues. Arnott previously served as Deputy Speaker in the 41st Parliament.

While Ontario’s newly elected government has only just been sworn into power, that didn’t stop the Premier Designate from taking steps to signal policies that will be pursued under his leadership.

Like last week, Government legislation continued marching forward in anticipation of the election period. One of the five bills the government introduced since proroguing the legislature in March has been passed into law.

This week, Government business in the Legislative Assembly, including the time allocation of Bill 8, Access to Consumer Credit Reports and Elevator Availability Act, 2018, was largely overshadowed by the run-up to the June, 2018 election.
