2018 Recipient Q&A

Q: What advice would you give a young lawyer starting out in your area of practice?

A: My advice would be to get involved in initiatives outside of the office early in their careers - for instance, speaking, writing, teaching or volunteering in the health law community. The OBA opens the doors to all of these opportunities which help shape one’s career.

Q: How has your OBA membership enriched your career?

A: In many ways, including assisting me with building a professional profile, developing business connections and keeping me updated on the law. Most importantly, my OBA membership has allowed me to foster strong relationships with health law lawyers who have become a network of colleagues and good friends.

Q:  What are you reading right now?

A: Thousands of pages of documents related to the Public Inquiry into our Long-Term Care System. The public hearings begin on June 5 so sadly, I am not reading for pleasure! But the case is incredibly interesting.

Q: What do you work toward in your spare time?

A: Spending quality moments with my family. It is often challenging in our careers to leave our work at the office and sometimes not possible. In my spare time, I work on clearing my mind of responsibilities and focussing my attention on the people who matter most.

Q: What inspires you?

A: People who are motivated in their careers to give back to the community. The lawyers who are committed to pro bono initiatives, mentoring, charities and volunteering are an inspiration.

Q: Do you prefer cats or dogs?

A: I love them both and have always had one or the other as part of my family. We recently welcomed Cole, our 6-month old black lab!
