Regulation to Amend Rules of Civil Procedure

On December 8, 2020, a regulation was filed to amend the Rules of Civil Procedure, O. Reg. 711-20. The regulation makes administrative amendments to align the Rules of Civil Procedure with legislative amendments that were introduced to remove the office of a traditional master.

OCJ & SCJ (All regions): Dec 7 Update

The Daily Court Lists website publishes the daily court lists for both the OCJ and SCJ. This website provides information about case names, as well as the time, location, and reasons for court appearances. As of December 7, 2020, two changes have been made to this website:

OCJ Message re COVID-19

The OCJ has issued a Message re COVID-19 regarding COVID-19 that includes encouraging judicial officials, parties and counsel to actively explore whether all, or any portion, of trials or other hearings that would otherwise be in person can be conducted using remote technology, and to be accommodating of such requests from opposing counsel or parties.

Health Information Update - Milton Courthouse (Nov. 23)

MAG has advised that an non-OPS individual who works in the Milton Courthouse (491 Steeles Ave. E) building has tested positive for COVID-19. For details see the memo provided by the MAG Recovery Secretariat.  - ​View Memo

OCJ Update re Criminal Case Management

The OCJ has issued a new Notice to the Profession and the Public regarding criminal case management appearances. Previous OCJ Notices stipulating that criminal case management appearances will be adjourned for five weeks (with a discretionary bench warrant if the accused person does not appear) will end on November 27, 2020. As of November 30, 2020, all accused persons will be required to attend their scheduled appearances in criminal case management court.

​Health Information Update – Brampton Courthouse (Nov. 17)

MAG has learned that an OPS employee who works in the courthouse has tested positive for COVID-19. The person was last in the courthouse on Thursday, November 12th, 2020, five days prior to being confirmed positive. The person was not symptomatic while in the courthouse, and still shows no symptoms. This individual is currently self-isolating as a normal public health preventative procedure and is following the direction of medical professionals. View Memo

OCJ Resumption of Criminal Trials and Preliminary Inquiries

The OCJ has announced that in-person criminal trials and preliminary inquiries in the Ontario Court of Justice will resume on November 30, 2020 at the following locations: Alexandria, Bradford, Elliot Lake, Kirkland Lake, Picton, Red Lake, and Sioux Lookout.

MAG Recovery Secretariat Update on Guelph Courthouse

The MAG Recovery Secretariat has provided an update on the Guelph Courthouse located at 36 Wyndham St. S., which was previously closed due to elevated CO2 readings. MAG’s update indicates that the landlord for the building has implemented a number of corrective measures, including inspection and remediation of the HVAC system. The levels of CO2 observed in the courthouse from October 27-30 have been below 800ppm, which is in alignment with Infrastructure Ontario’s (IO) recommended targets.
