The activities will include trivia games and debates to test the students’ knowledge of the Charter and special guests who can talk about their experiences as young people fighting for human rights issues affecting them.

The 2007 Charter & You program included a speeche by Dr. Justine Blainey-Broker. As a 12-year old girl and gifted hockey player, Dr. Blainey-Broker won a human rights case striking down the section of Ontario’s Human Rights Code that permitted gender discrimination in sports. The day also included a video conference from Montreal with Gurbaj Multani, a 17-year old student in Quebec whose right to religious freedom was recognized by the Supreme Court of Canada in a case in which he won the right to attend school wearing a kirpan (a ceremonial dagger worn by orthodox Sikhs).

The event is being organized by the members of the Constitutional, Civil Liberties and Human Rights Section and the Education Law Section of the Ontario Bar Association. Lawyers who practice in these areas of law will be on hand to run the events and speak to students as well. Snacks and a light lunch will be provided to all students along with prizes for the games. There is no fee for this event.
