2008 Award for Excellence in Civil Litigation

The OBA Award for Excellence in Civil Litigation was created to recognize contributions and/or achievements by members of the Ontario Bar Association:
- to proven outstanding advocacy skills
- to the highest levels of professionalism, integrity and civility
- to teaching of civil litigation and practice
- to the enhancement of the practice of civil litigation
- to leadership in the Civil Litigation Bar
Only one award shall be awarded annually.
| Eligibility |
All OBA members who are practicing lawyers in Ontario but not including current members of the Executive of Civil Litigation Section or the Executive of the OBA. |
| Criteria for Selection |
The award should recognize any or any combination of the following outstanding achievements:
- proven exceptional skills in oral and written advocacy;
- contribution to legal education;
- contribution to the community through pro bono work and other projects or initiatives;
- leadership in the Civil Litigation Bar through sharing knowledge, experience, skill, commitment, by acting as a role model to the younger members of the profession as well as to his or her peers at the civil litigation bar;
- contributions to the development of civil litigation related policies, procedures, practice and legislation.

| Nomination Procedure |
Nominations shall be solicited:
- by a request for nominations published at least 30 days prior in the Ontario Reports;
- through members of the Executive of the Civil Litigation Section; and
- through members of the Civil Litigation Bar throughout the Province of Ontario. Any member of the Civil Litigation Section of OBA in good standing is eligible to nominate a candidate by submission in writing, together with a curriculum vitae outlining the nominee’s qualifications (if required by the committee). The nominator must indicate that the candidate has been advised of the nomination prior to the nomination deadline and consents thereto (if required by the committee).

| Deadline for Nominations |
A nomination form and supporting material must be submitted to Peter Henderson, Nominations Committee Chair, Civil Litigation Section c/o the Ontario Bar Association, 20 Toronto Street, Suite 300, Toronto, Ontario, M5C 2B8 or by FAX (416) 869-1390 no later than 4:00 p.m on Fri., March 7, 2008. |
| Presentation on October 16, 2008 |
The award will be presented at a gala Award Dinner on October 16, 2008 and thereafter as determined by the Executive of the Civil Litigation Section. |
| Nomination and Selection Committee |
A Committee consisting of the Chair(s) of OBA Civil Litigation Section, who (or one of whom) will be the Chair of the Nomination and Selection Committee (hereinafter the "Committee"), the Vice Chair or the OBA Civil Litigation Section, and at least three other members as determined by the Chair, shall be formed and shall perform the following functions:
- solicit nominations from Section members across Ontario;
- obtain information about any candidate including letters of support and curriculum vitae, if required in the opinion of the committee;
- otherwise coordinate matters relating to the award.

| Decision
| The recipient of the award shall be choosen by the Committee, from the candidates submitted through the Nomination process. |

Sponsorship: Is open to private sector organizations who have a vested interest and are stakeholders in Civil Litigation in Ontario.
