On May 25, 2011, the OBA Young Lawyers’ Division East, held a Personal Injury Primer which served to address some of the most important issues that young lawyers will be faced with when working on a personal injury file. Speakers Debbie Orth, of Bertschi Orth Smith LLP, Tara Sweeney of Soloway Wright LLP and David Hollingsworth of Goldberg Wiseman Stroud & Hollingsworth, provided those in attendance with insight into all major procedural steps in a motor vehicle and personal injury file, beginning with a client walking through the door or receiving a defence, until trial. Some of the issues which were address included: changes to the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS), the interrelation between the SABS and tort claim, retaining experts and qualifying them at trial and how to properly assess and value a personal injury case.
Any junior lawyer working with password protected forms has probably realized that even unprotected fields on protected forms have formatting restrictions. These are the fields where you are supposed to draft the content or narrative of your complaint, claim, defence, application, response, appeal, etc. Typically, you’re allowed to type words in the field – but that’s it.
YLD East was treated to a personalized tour of the National Gallery of Canada with contemporary art curator, Jonathan Shaughnessy. The contemporary art collection at the National Gallery represents current trends in the art world, engaging living artists and positioning Canadian artists within a larger international context. Curator Shaughnessy showed us some of his favourite pieces in the contemporary art collection and explained how the curator selects which pieces to showcase at the National Gallery. It was an exciting opportunity for young lawyers to contemplate new and old pieces displayed in the contemporary art collection and to debate and exchange insights into art appreciation and contemporary art. Following the tour of the contemporary collection, attendees met at the Metropolitan Brasserie for a networking cocktail reception.

I also offer my gratitude to the OBA executive and OBA staff who have helped make this another successful year for YLD East. Thank you!
