David W. Scott Q.C. Chosen OBA Outstanding Litigator

May 19, 2005 – Toronto - The Ontario Bar Association (OBA) Civil Litigation Section is pleased to announce that it will be presenting its second annual Award for Excellence in Civil Litigation to David W. Scott Q.C., Co-Chair and Partner at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP.
Mr. Scott will be honoured at an award ceremony at a special dinner at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel in Toronto, on October 19, 2005. Canada’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Allan Rock, will deliver the keynote address and the Honourable R. Roy McMurtry, Chief Justice of Ontario will paint and present an original work of art for Mr. Scott at the award dinner.
"The Award for Excellence in Civil Litigation was created to recognize outstanding contributions by members of the Ontario Bar Association," said Awards Committee Co-Chair, Orlando Da Silva. "In giving this award to David Scott, we are honouring a lifetime of contributions."
David Scott is a Partner in the Ottawa office of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP and has been an esteemed member of the legal community for 43 years. Mr. Scott has played major roles in many significant matters in Canadian legal history and is one of Canada’s leading authorities on intellectual property. He has represented clients from all walks of life including three prime ministers, the Chief Justice of Canada and justices of the Supreme Court.
Mr. Scott has lectured at, and taken part in, university, bar admission and continuing legal education programs on a variety of topics and has written extensively in the areas of patent law, wrongful dismissal, the Charter of Rights and Freedoms in Civil Litigation, and corporate directors’ liability. He has served as a Bencher for the Law Society of Upper Canada for many years and last year he was elected the first Canadian President of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
"Selection for the award is based on professional accomplishment, exhibited leadership in the Civil Litigation Bar and contribution to the community through pro bono work and other projects or initiatives," said Awards Committee Co-Chair, Derek Freeman.
Mr. Scott is also deeply involved with the community having served a number of charitable organizations including the United Way, the Ottawa General Hospital, the John Howard Society of Ottawa, the Victorian Order of Nurses, CARE Canada, and the Canadian Stroke Network.
"The Ontario Bar Association is delighted that such a dedicated member of the bar will receive this prestigious award," said OBA President Ian Kirby. "David Scott is a deserving recipient and we are proud to have him as a member."
