Commitment to Equality Award

** Please print the Nomination form. The deadline is April 12, 2011. **

Nomination Form

The Feminist Legal Analysis Section of the OBA gives the Award for Commitment to Equality in alternate years.

The Section is committed to recognizing the diversity of Canadian women in its selection of Award recipients.

The Award has previously been given to The Honourable Claire L’Heureux-Dubé, the late Doris Anderson, Anne Derrick (now Judge), Michele Landsberg, Mary Eberts, Linda Silver Dranoff, Professor Ursula Franklin and Professor Emily Carasco.

Purpose
The Award recognizes the significant contributions made by feminist lawyers and activists to equality rights in our society.

Criteria/Eligibility:
The Feminist Legal Analysis Section of the OBA gives the Award for Commitment to Equality in alternate years.  The Award recognizes the significant contributions made by feminist lawyers and activists to equality rights in our society.

To be eligible for the Award, the recipient must be a Canadian woman who has demonstrated her commitment to the values of equality and equity by her outstanding sustained contribution to the betterment of women in Canada.  The recipient need not be a lawyer, but her activities on behalf of women must exemplify Charter and human rights values.  The Section is committed to recognizing the diversity of Canadian women in its selection of Award recipients.
Deadline for Nominations
Nominations will close at 5:00 p.m., April 12, 2011 or such later date as selected by the FLAC Executive.

Selection Process
The FLAC Executive invites Section members to submit names and a brief biography of women who they think have made an outstanding lifetime contribution to the betterment of women in Canada.  We ask that the biography should include the achievements and actions which make the woman worthy of being nominated.  We encourage diversity in nominations.  The woman must be a feminist who has demonstrated a deep commitment to women’s equality rights, but need not be a lawyer.

The selection of the Award recipient will be made by the FLAC Executive through the Awards Committee appointed by the Executive of FLAC.  This year’s committee is comprised of Maryellen Symons, Past Chair, Michelle Kemper, Current Chair, and Joan MacDonald, Current Vice-Chair.

Presentation of the Award

We present the award in alternate odd numbered years at a fall dinner presentation ceremony, which has always been one of our most highly attended events.
