Some lucky people have known the type of lawyer they will be from the outset. These people are, however, the exception. Most of us went through law school having only vague notions about the actual practice of law and precisely where our career paths would take us. We recognize that it is tough to know your precise career map at any stage, especially as early as law school. Knowing your legal passion early on, however, will help you whittle down the massive array of legal jobs, practice areas and objectives that you face.
Once you recognize what motivates you on an intellectual basis, you can then research the type of opportunities and work you can anticipate in your chosen career path. Particular practice areas may sound glamorous and exciting, but take the time to find out what the actual day-to-day practice will entail. Examine the kinds of practice and working environments (i.e. private practice, in-house, government, education, etc.) common to your chosen field, as well as average pay-scales, employer expectations and job demands.
